Do Electric Cars Have Gears?

August 21st, 2024 by

For about a century or so, cars didn’t change a whole lot – while the way they looked evolved, the parts that made them go remained rather similar. But electric vehicles have revolutionized how we travel, and the transmission is the perfect example of this. For example, while gas-powered cars typically have several gears, the same isn’t true for EVs. So, do electric cars have gears? Mauer GMC has the answer.

Do EVs Have Gears?

Cars that run with engines need multiple gears with different ratios in order to produce power. To regulate an electric motor, however, electric vehicles only use a single-speed transmission. As such, they don’t actually have gears.

Why Don’t EVs Need Multi-Speed Transmissions?

There are several reasons why EVs can make do just fine with a one-speed transmission. Electric motors offer instant power, without the need to rev to build up torque. Because the single-speed transmission enables the motor to run at a single speed, it is also much more efficient than a multi-speed transmission. Another benefit is a smoother ride, as a one-speed transmission removes the need to shift gears.

Two-Speed Transmissions Could Be Coming to EVs

Automakers are continually looking for ways to improve their cars. This is why some are starting to build EVs with two-speed transmissions. The first speed handles acceleration, while the second speed is there to deliver top speed and provide better efficiency.
