Necessary Equipment

The good news with a jump-start is that you don’t need a lot of equipment. The most important component is a set of jumper cables, which you should be sure to keep in your trunk in case of such an emergency. The only other thing you need is access to a working vehicle.

Make the Connections

To start, have the working vehicle driven up to your car and get them as close nose-to-nose as possible. Once it’s in range, connect one end of the red cable to the positive terminal on the dead battery. Next, attach the other end to the same terminal on the good battery, then connect the black end to the negative terminal on that same battery. The last step is to attach the other black end not to the battery, but an unpainted surface, such as the hood strut.

Run the Working Vehicle

Now, turn on the car with the working battery and keep it on for a few minutes. After that, turn on the other vehicle. If everything went off without a hitch, it should start up. If it does, keep this vehicle on for at least 20 minutes and drive around if you can to charge the battery up. If the car didn’t start, check the connections and try again.
